Fred Thompson Comprehensive or Incomprehensible? on the Paul Harvey Show today. The audio is here.

Most Americans know that we have an illegal immigration problem in this country, with perhaps as many as 20 million people residing here unlawfully. And I think most Americans have a pretty good idea about how to at least start solving the problem — secure our nation’s borders.

But there’s an old saying in Washington that, in dealing with any tough issue, half the politicians hope that citizens don’t understand it while the other half fear that people actually do. This kind of thinking was apparent with the “comprehensive” immigration reform bill that the U.S. Senate and the White House negotiated yesterday.

I’d tell you what was in the legislation, but 24 hours after the politicians agreed the bill looked good, the Senate lawyers were still writing what may turn out to be a one thousand page document. In fact, a final version of the bill most likely will not be made available to the public until after the legislation is passed. That may come five days from now. That’s like trying to digest an eight-course meal on a 15-minute lunch break.

We’ve tried the “comprehensive” route before to solve the illegal immigration problem with a bit more care and deliberation, and the results haven’t been good. Back in May 1985, Congress promised us that it would come up with a comprehensive plan to solve the problem of illegal immigration and our porous borders. Eighteen months later, in November 1986, that comprehensive plan was signed into law.

Twenty-two years and millions of illegal immigrants later, that comprehensive plan hasn’t done what most Americans wanted it to do — secure America’s borders. Now Washington says the new “comprehensive” plan will solve the problem that the last comprehensive plan didn’t.

The fact is our border and immigration systems are still badly broken. We were reminded of this when Newsweek reported that the family of three of the men, arrested last week for allegedly plotting to kill American military personnel at Fort Dix, New Jersey, entered the U.S. illegally more than 20 years ago; filed for asylum back in 1989, but fell off the government’s radar screen when federal bureaucrats essentially lost track of the paperwork. Wonder how many times that’s been replicated?

Is it any wonder that a lot of folks today feel like they’re being sold a phony bill of goods on border security? A “comprehensive” plan doesn’t mean much if the government can’t accomplish one of its most basic responsibilities for its citizens — securing its borders. A nation without secure borders will not long be a sovereign nation.

No matter how much lipstick Washington tries to slap onto this legislative pig, it’s not going to win any beauty contests. In fact, given Congress’s track record, the bill will probably get a lot uglier — at least from the public’s point of view. And agreeing to policies before actually seeing what the policies are is a heck of a way to do business.

We should scrap this “comprehensive” immigration bill and the whole debate until the government can show the American people that we have secured the borders — or at least made great headway. That would give proponents of the bill a chance to explain why putting illegals in a more favorable position than those who play by the rules is not really amnesty.

If he keeps this up, Fred Thompson will be the next President of the United States.

Fortress America

May 17, 2007

Earlier today I posted GOP raises White Flag on Immigration, RIP America?. While reflecting on it tonight, I realized I have never posted my thoughts on Fortress America. What is it? What do I mean?

Fortress America is my idea to secure America. In my mind, this should have been issue number 1 on September 12, 2001. Before we open the front door, we must lock the back door!

  • Secure our borders—Every mile of land and sea with fences, technology, guards, etc. We should guard this country like a medieval castle.
  • Identification program for immigrants that cannot be circumvented.
  • Severe penalties for business that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Shut down repeat offenders.
  • While it is not PC, any illegal immigrant that is Arab/Muslim should be deported immediately. Why? Look no further than the recent Fort Dix terrorist plot.
  • Any illegal immigrant who has committed a crime (beyond there initial immigration crime) should be deported immediately.
  • Make any and all changes/enhancements to Homeland Security/Immigration/Border Patrol/etc. to make the security measures successful.
  • Make English the official language of the United States
  • Deport all illegal immigrant males 18-34. Why? Terrorism, crime, gang activity. Enough said.
  • Deport all illegal immigrants with communicable diseases. DO IT TODAY. Health screenings must be required as part of any future immigration reform.

Only AFTER these steps are put in place should we begin to TALK about changes to our future immigration policy. On that point, I’ve got some ideas too:

  • No illegal immigrants in America now should ever be given the right to become US citizens before people going the legal route.
  • No illegal immigrants in America now should ever be given the right to become US citizens without returning to their homeland and follow the legal route to citizenship.
  • The BEST illegal immigrants should come to expect is a permanent residence status.
  • No social security benefits for illegal immigrants period. Only if, and when, they become citizens can they participate in the program. No exceptions. The program is in disarray now, we don’t need to make it worse.

Is it too much to ask for secure borders and respect for our laws?

(Update: Added English as the official language)
(Update #2: Added deportation for males 18-34, those with communicable diseases, and no social security benefits.)

Bill West writes Immigration “Reform” Will Be National Security Disaster over at Counterterrorism Blog. He summarizes his argument with:

The devil truly is in the details. Conveniently for the politicians on both sides of the aisle pushing for a feel good bill, they are ignoring real world details in all this. If what is being proposed on the Hill becomes law, contrary to what some political leaders claim, there will be significant security risks emanating from the process.

Can I get an Amen?

Securing America should have been the number 1 priority on the morning of September 12, 2001. Now almost 6 years later we still have not secured our borders and today we raised the white flag.

Jack Cashill recently looked at The Answers To The OKC Committee’s Questions

“Could the al Qaeda explosives expert [Ramzi Yousef] have been introduced to the angry American who proclaimed his hatred for America,” writes Richard Clarke of Nichols’ visit to the Philippines in his book Against All Enemies. “We do not know, despite some FBI investigation.”

“Some FBI investigation?” Why was there not a massive FBI investigation? The House subcommittee now asks this very question. Although the committee may be too polite to say so, the reason Islamic terrorist links were ignored has more to do with politics than with security. Once arrested, McVeigh and Nichols served as poster boys for the natural progression of the “Republican revolution.” The Clinton administration and its media allies spun OKC so hard to the right that it left America dizzy. If, however, the arrested bombers proved to be mere “lily whites”– that is stooges recruited by Islamic terrorists to take the fall–they would lose their political value.

As an added bonus, the “lily white” factor encouraged America’s progressive to scold those who had publicly presumed that Islamic terrorists were behind the bombing. This included not only the political right but also non-partisan terrorist experts like Steven Emerson, who had already been upbraided for “bigotry and misrepresentations” and “creating mass hysteria against American Arabs” for his PBS documentary American Jihad. In fact, it was in Oklahoma City in late 1992 that Emerson, covering an unrelated press conference for CNN, first stumbled upon the jihadi presence in the United States.

Then too, as with the first World Trade Center bombing and possibly with TWA Flight 800, an Iraqi connection would have forced a serious military response, about which the Clinton administration was always queasy.

To the detriment of our national security, the orchestrated Democratic reaction to Oklahoma City shamed reporters and investigators from pursuing Islamic terrorism aggressively. This, Jayna Davis documents all too painfully from her personal experience. The scary thing is they are still trying to shame us. As to the FBI, its veterans are just trying to cover their tracks and protect their reputations—business as usual.
