Purpose
Save the world by taking people from every nation and forming a new people.
Save Sinners
Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners
(1 Timothy 1:15)
Save World
we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.
(John 4:42)
For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
- Redemption of the world (new heaven and new earth)
- Redemption of individuals (new birth)
Fallen in Adam, restored in Christ. (Romans 5:12-21)
Extent
Promises to Abraham
you shall be the father of a multitude of nations
(Genesis 17:4)in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed
(Genesis 12:3)
“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
True Israel, Children of Abraham, Bride of Christ
So then, those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.
(Galatians 3:9)for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
(Galatians 3:26-29)Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation
(Revelation 5:9)
Universality
- Includes all kinds of persons
And in this way all Israel will be saved
(Romans 11:26)- BUT not all people
there is a remnant, chosen by grace
(Romans 11:5)For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
(Romans 8:19-23)He will save his people from their sins
(Matthew 1:21)
All creation waits
Definite Atonement
Everyone or His people?
- Matthew 1:21
Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,
(Luke 1:68)
for he has visited and redeemed his peoplehe chose us in him before the foundation of the world
(Ephesians 1:4)those whom he foreknew he also predestined
(Romans 8:29)God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved
(2 Thessalonians 2:13)I lay down my life for the sheep
(John 10:15)you do not believe because you are not part of my flock
(John 10:26)I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours
(John 17:9)Behold, I and the children God has given me
(Hebrews 2:13)as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her
(Ephesians 5:25)And will not God give justice to his elect
(Luke 18:7)and not for the nation only, but also to gather into one the children of God who are scattered abroad
(John 11:52)
Accomplishments
Penal Substitutionary Atonement
- Christ suffered in our place as our substitute
- He paid for our sins
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
(Matthew 26:28)- In fact, he became sin for us
For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(2 Corinthians 5:21)- Old Testament sacrifices point to Christ
Nor do you understand that it is better for you that one man should die for the people, not that the whole nation should perish.” He did not say this of his own accord, but being high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation
(John 11:50-51)Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us
(Galatians 3:13)
Redemption
- Kinsman-redeemer (Ruth 3:9)
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.
(1 Corinthians 6:19-20)You were bought with a price; do not become slaves of men.
(1 Corinthians 7:23)denying the Master who bought them
(2 Peter 2:1)And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
(Psalm 130:8)- Ransomed
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
(Mark 10:45) also Matthew 20:28who gave himself as a ransom for all
(1 Timothy 2:6)gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people
(Titus 2:14)Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood
(Acts 20:28)
We were “bought back” at a price
Propitiation
- Removed God’s Wrath
God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
(Romans 3:25)Yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them; he restrained his anger often and did not stir up all his wrath.
(Psalm 78:38)Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.
(John 3:36)- Romans 9:22
Reconciliation
- “To render no longer opposed”
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
(John 15:13)For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
(Romans 5:10)through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
(Colossians 1:20)All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
(2 Corinthians 5:18-21)
Sacrifice and Satisfaction
- Did Christ satisfy God’s justice on the cross?
Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.
(Hebrews 10:18)- Isaiah 53:10-12
- It is FINISHED (John 19:30)
