KZPS Lone Star 92.5, a Clear Channel Experiement

April 23, 2007

Lone Star 92.5 FM

I heard bits of this on The Hardline this past Friday, but Dallas radio station KZPS is changing formats. Make that has changed formats. As of today the Clear Channel station is Lone Star 92.5 playing Outlaw Country + Classic Rock + Alternative Country.

They are also changing the way they do advertising. No long commercial breaks, more sponsored programming. I think we will see much more of this in the future. I remember The Ticket playing around with this a few times in the past.

[Update] Side story, FrontBurner notes how DallasNews.com is using the NY Times as a source on this story instead of doing their own news gathering. I believe it is just another sign of the times. Newspapers as we know them are dying rather quickly. Just wait until the environmental movement puts them in their cross-hairs!

[Update 2x] FrontBurner now points out that the Star-Telegram had the KZPS story on Sunday.

Looks like the "ZIPPIES" went back to the old classic top 40. Remember the first change to the "NEW KZPS" not really any change, but they were doing a format something like this:

"THE NEW KZPS, THE CLASSIC ROCK STATION"

"THE NEW KZPS, THE CLASSIC ROCK STATION"

"THE NEW KZPS, THE CLASSIC ROCK STATION"

"THE NEW KZPS, THE CLASSIC ROCK STATION"

"THE NEW KZPS, THE CLASSIC ROCK STATION"

    REPEAT, REPEAT
  • Hate this stuff too
This crap is still on the air. They are playing as many commercials now as any other station. Some car commercial ended and now a Kmart commercial is running.

As least Bo and Jim talk about stuff that other stations featured a week or two ago. They are the cutting edge of last week.
  • Hate this stuff
Well, so much for no commercials. They play the red neck Rodeo Ford commercial. What-a-burger commercials every 5 minutes and all the crap they have the on-air no-talent read.
  • amye
I love the new station. Yall play the best of TEXAS music ever. For all you yankees and others that do not like GOOOO Home!
  • tc
I am about to throw every radio in my life into the freeway and sit and watch it get ran over for hrs.Dallas radio sucks so bad that I have cought myself listening to this crap Clear Channel calls music.Crap such Crap.
Lex and Terry in the morn.on other station make me want to drive into Lake Ray Hubbard at 110mph.F all of Dallas radio it sucks and will continue to suck as long as we live.
    F Dallas radio.
  • Was back home in Dallas about a month ago and tuned in to what I thought was the old classic rock KZPS and low and behold I heard Jason Isbell, Son Volt, Drive by Truckers, Willie, Pat Green, etc. I was amazed. I never turned it to anything else. I live in the Muscle Shoals area of Alabama, where Jason and the DBT's hail from and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. They don't hardly play em here at home. Keep up the good work!

Cannot stand the new format. I switched to 98.7.Hate to say it but it is really bad.
  • Thomas
I am 25 yrs old and I really enjoyed listening to the old classic rock music. I like listening to country as well but there are more than enough country stations out there. Why would they decide to take away one of the few classic rock stations? It's ridiculous!
  • Al
It's great, I live in Pittsburgh and was in Ft. Worth last week for work. I found 92.5 and never changed the station the whole time I was there. Now that I'm back home its'streaming on the computer where ever I'm at. Also found the Stockyards.... great place.
  • daniel
This station is great on the radio but it sucks on the Computer it seems to not be up in the puter yet Hope all this gets taken care off before I consider it a total waste I want to give this radio station a chance but my patience is running LOW
  • steve
i really hate the new station, the music suck beyond beleif. i miss jimi, zeppelin, flotd, sabbath...everything good.
  • mike L.
great change of pace..........who ever thought of this format needs a raise!!
  • Adam
This new station format is a joke, cornball redneck country is not real music, Rock and Roll lives forever, too bad KZPS 92.5 sold out to the Jerry Springer trailer trash listeners.
  • Rick
This could be a life changing event.
Listening to *MUSIC* on fm again without having to drive 120 miles in any givin' direction.. goodby NPR, I'll still check in from time to time.
Mornings with Fox and friends, the volume down and the radio on... still get the squirrel shots.
Evenings on the back porch with a cold beer and the radio, in anticipation of what might come next.... Beats hell outa flippin' between IFC and the hitory channel tryin for a fix.

Gonna have to enjoy it while it lasts.. corporate will fuck this up
  • GARY L GRANT
I LOVE IT. KEEP THAT NASHVILLE FIREWALL TURNED ON.I WAS WAITING ON THIS ,I JUST DID NOT KNOW IT.KICKSASS!!!
  • Mike
Dont change a thing. If the old 92.5 fans dont like the new format they can always get BONEd.
  • RF - yep Rat Fink!
Another flashback? Didn't think too much of it (the format change) at first but I've always loved the "hill country" music - can't stand the eastern version of country. And still playin' Clapton, Charlie Daniels, SRV, Skynard - dang - I'm going to have to start checking the ashtray for roaches again!
  • Aylin
NOOOOO this lone star radio thing sucks. I miss the classic rock station it was sooo awsome. they played zepplin and ac/dc and dio and black sabbath. and all the coool stuff that no other station played.........

    this bites yo
  • This station went from one of the BEST to the SUCKIEST bunch of sucks that ever sucked.

WTF is up with the "format"?!?!? I have to sit through a dozen or so completely obscure pieces of CRAP in order to hear one halfway decent tune now.

This is the epitome of corporate MORONS thinking they know what is best. Well, at least there's still 93.3 THE BONE. If Walton and Johnson would just kill off that tranny sounding character on their morning show, they'd be the perfect station.
  • Scott
Finally a local station playing music I Haven't known all the words to for the past 40 years. I own 3,000 plus albums and enjoy variety. I find it refreshing to hear seldom played music. Yes they are a bit redundant but give 'em time and any successful business will listen to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. Give them a chance,
Rome wasn't built in a day. What's up with trashing Hank Jr.??? More importantly doesen't anybody know enough words to say something more profound than "It sucks"!! Is everyone stuck in a rut. I guess many local listeners would prefer to hear Led Zepplen, Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Floyd etc. over and over again and then think the new format is repetative. If classic rock and roll is what they truly want then what happend to Robin Troyer, Pat Travers, Moxy, and others like Frank Moreno and Mahogany Rush. They rarely if ever played any of them. As for me a little John Mayall never hurt anybody considering I'm sick of Iron Butterfly.
  • Mike
Way too late comming to Dallas. I used to surf around trying to find something good to listen to. My station hasnt changed since you changed format.
  • AJ
Not crazy about the change. Miss the classic rock!!!! I'm searching for a new station!
  • Rick
It's about time this made it's up to the metro-mess. Nothing new about the format. It's been a staple down in the hill country where some semblance of independent radio still lives.
  • bryan
Best radio station I've heard in TX. Hell, best radio station I've heard ever.. and it kills me to support Clear Channel, but at least they are finally putting out something worth listening to.

I have SIRIUS in my car and it's been off for almost a week.

    PS.

Classic rock is dead, get a life you stinking boomers and johnsers.
  • CLAUDIA
I miss Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones (recent stuff)Foreigner but I like JD being on during the day and at lunch. I can certainly do without Hank Williams, Jr. I would like to hear Poco, Souther-Hillman-Fury and some of the other mid 70's stuff. I can't decide for sure if I like it yet, but I'm giving it a shot. I have listened to JD since 1972 or 73...even back to KFAD!
  • Bobby
I think its great. Its kinda like setting in a bar or private club and listening to the jukebox. Everybody goes up and plays a favorite or two. A good mix of music. A station only true MUSIC fans can appreciate. I play guitar, had a band and we played almost every song the station is playing now. A station for everybody. Americana, Rock, Outlaw, Texas originals. All the songs we grew up with.
Just give a listen and be a little open minded to cross over in music. I mean, if ya dont like the song thats on, wait 3 or 4 minutes, its over. How is it different than listening to Molly Hatchet, then having to listen to Pretenders Back to Ohio, before gettin to jam to Allman Brothers? There is always gonna be bad with the good.
  • Gregory Zabransky
This is truly the worst idea ever from the certainly not clearchannel but (blind, dumb and deaf channel owners. Some one should definitely be fired and stoned beyond recognition over this. I agree, there isn't a decent classic rock station out there now. The new music being pushed from this station really sucks beyond words. This certainly must be a ploy to send everyone running out to purchase satellite radio devices... I have stated countless of times that I would never pay for radio when it's free, but that thought is getting much, much easier to swallow now...
  • RJ
WELL WHY ARE IS THAT CRY, WHEN THE OLD FORMAT PLAYED CLASSIC ROCK , GREAT, BUT THEN IT WAS SOME TRASH FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE DUMPSTER, I REALLY DONT LIKE ALL THEIR PLAYING NOW SO I JUST GO TO MY FAV STATION AND COME BACK WHEN ITS GOOD, I GUESS HANK S--- JR IS GONNA STAY BUT THANK GOD FOR VOLUME CONTROLS
  • why?
I've been lisening to Texas Radio all my life (Q102, the Zoo, Z97, and kzps) I've seen them all change formats and die a slow death. Bo and Jim had a great thing when they came back and jumped from the Bone back to kzps and it made metroplex rock complete again. Now I don't have anything against the new format except I tuned in for classic rock. We used to have it all but now there isn't even a decent classic rock station left on texas radio and as for me I'm buying a cd plyer for my truck. the people in charge at clearchannel should crawl jump back into limp wristed panty dragging pimple popping pink vw's and get out of texas radio.
  • Lone Star is on loud and clear up here in Boston, MA - my new favorite station! I blogged about it last week at my site, should anyone care to read..

mel we are on the same page , thak you , im glad im not the only on that feels that hank jr is only living off his daddy , for the hank 111 as long as its his country im all for it. great lost i had forgotten some , i hope they dig deeper.
  • Mel
I too am an old Zew Freak and remember when KAFM chnged from "Album Rock" to "Progressive Country" before KTXQ brought in Bo and Jim. I could like the change if they will widen their playlist. I mean how many times a day do we need to hear "Lay Down Sally" or "Born on the Bayou" or any of the other overplayed stuff, not that I don't like EC or CCR. Hank I and III are both good, kick Jr to the curb. Good to hear some Dead, Little Feat, Allman Bros, Skynyrd, MTB, CDB, just dig a little deeper and don't play the same tired old tunes. Also more Texas Artists; Guy Clark (background tune on one of Willie's promos), Terry Allen (Wrote New Delhi Freight Train),Flatlanders toghether or solo. How about some Bugs Henderson or Homer Henderson, Bill Kirchen/Commander Cody, Los Lonely Boys, Doug Sahm. Drinking tunes, we like to drink don't we? Old Texas Blues Artists: Freddie King, Albert Colins, Lightning Hopkins, Mance Lipscomb, and the guys that they influenced - Johny Winter, ZZ Top, and Stevie Ray. Of course if they get too diverse then who will be listening to KHYI or KNON. I'd hate to see Clear Channel put those staions out of business.
  • Bob
Country? As low brow as rap. Back to searching for rock n roll.
  • The new station is brilliant. It is nice to get to hear bands like the Drive-by Truckers and Son Volt on the radio. They are off to a great start. Now if they were to get rid of the talk in the morning.
  • gigi
Well HELLO there Lone Star! What great fun it is to listen to you! It's about time that music played on air was entertaining! I've yelled "wooo-hooo!!!" at least four times in the past 24 hours, drove with more enthusiasm, and called friends to tell'em about cha!!!
    Thanks!
    gigi
