A look at 1 Corinthians 7

To Everybody

Be content in the situation you are in. (v. 7:17-24)

Nevertheless, each one should retain the place in life that the Lord assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches. (1 Corinthians 7:17 NIV)

Your current situation is an assignment from God. Why you ask? To be faithful!

To Singles

Take advantage of the benefits on singleness. (v. 7:8) Don’t waste the opportunities.

  • Less concern in troubled times. (v. 7:26b-32)

    Relatively free from anxiety

  • Greater opportunity for focused ministry. (v. 7:32b-35)

In marriage your interests are divided, whereas when single you can have undivided devotion to God.

To Married People

Accept your limitations. (v. 7:35)

If you are married with children you cannot fulfill your full ministry potential for God, and that is OK. It is His plan for us to have children.

Jeff mentioned Andy Stanley’s Choosing to Cheat: Who Wins When Family and Work Collide?. He pointed out that by saying “yes” to one area of your life you are in effect saying “no” to another and that we must be sure to choose the right yeses.

Further Reflection

Wherever God has you, consider how you can take advantage of your current situation to make an eternal impact for God.

Hi Eric,

I am a single christian woman. I always wondered why I cannot attrack single men. I have friends, male and female that are handsome and beautiful people that have never married. That makes me feel better.
I strive to stay in prayer and seek God’s will in this. I am tired of being strong and independent. I would like to have someone to lean on and talk to. I do not have any close friends near by. It has been so long since I socialized or had a real conversation with someone that I do not know if I could it do it now. Singles still need friends and mentors. As you get older, they are harder to come by because most of them have families that need them more. It would be nice to have someone’s shoulder to lean on and cry on at times.
